Married: 01 Jan 1846 to Esther Wilkinson in Leigh, Lancashire County, England. On his marriage certificate to Esther, his occupation is shown as farmer. On the 1851 Census (Pennington in Leigh) his occupation is listed as "Oastler", a synonym for "hostler". Could mean "one who takes care of horses/mules". 

Widowed: (from Esther) in 1861.  She died in childbirth. does not appear the child lived either.

On the 1861 census, he is a widower and his occupation is listed as 'Laborer Agric'. His birthplace is shown as "Bedford".

On the 1871 census, he is a widower, and occupation of 'Ag Lab', and born in Culcheth.

In the 1881 census, he is a widower, age 64, Farm Laborer, living in "Pennington in Leigh" with his son, Thomas Dixon (20) who is a "Journ Baker". Address is 10 Jones Square. On the birth certificate of his son, James Jr., his occupation is listed as 'ostler'.

They had the following children:

John Dixon  Born: abt 1847 in Bedford, Leigh, Lanc. England
John shows up in the 1851 census (Pennington in Leigh) a a 4 year old. He does not appear in the 1861 census as a 14 year old with the family.  It is possible he may be boarding as a servant with another family.  Greater possibility that he died. (unconfirmed)
